Working with children, especially children who come from low-income families, has been a constant in my life. While following my studies in the areas of Communication and Marketing in my home country, Peru, I had the opportunity to provide volunteer services to two non-profit organizations, INABIF (Instituto Nacional de Beneficiencia Infantil) and SUMBI (Servicios Educativos y Propuesta Social). Both organizations are dedicated to help children in poor areas with nutrition, education, and, in general, any care that can insure their proper development. The experience I gained was immeasurable. I learned, and still believe, that the roles of the teacher goes beyond the transmission of knowledge. The motor of a successful education process is the heart and brain of the teacher.

The central part and mission of a school falls in the kind of curriculum chosen. The curriculum is able to reflect the school objectives and standards. But its power can only be developed, amplified, or revealed through the attitude of the teachers. Combining heart and brain, an educator can make the curriculum powerful. The heart helps to view and understand each student as an individual with different needs, skills, and expectations. It reminds the teacher to keep trying to connect with the young learners. The brain works to find the right methods and tools to help students to discover the potential of their skills through knowledge.

A teacher is a role model, somebody who can teach math, science, history, but also, repesct, honesty, good manners, patience, responsibility, and love for knowledge. We are born with the innate ability to learn, teachers must never let the students forget that.
